Making Room for What Matters Most
The holiday season is often synonymous with packed schedules, endless to-do lists, and the pressure to say “yes” to everything. While it’s tempting to try to fit it all in, overcommitting can leave us feeling stressed, disconnected, and unable to enjoy the magic of the season.
This year, let’s flip the script. Instead of doing more, let’s focus on doing what matters most. Here’s how you can organize your holiday calendar to create space for meaningful moments and traditions that truly bring you joy.
Define What Matters Most
Start by asking yourself (and your family, if applicable) these questions:
What holiday traditions bring us the most joy?
Which events or commitments align with our values?
How do we want to feel during the holiday season?
Use the answers as your compass. They’ll help you decide what to prioritize and what to let go of. Letting go can be hard at first but it gets easier with practice. I’m still learning how to set boundaries in December.
Say No to the Good, Yes to the Best
Not every invitation or opportunity deserves a spot on your calendar. Saying “no” to some good things allows you to say “yes” to the best things—the ones that truly resonate with you.
Here’s how to politely decline:
“Thank you so much for inviting me! I’m keeping things simple this year and won’t be able to join, but I hope it’s a wonderful event.”
“This sounds amazing, but I have other commitments. Let’s catch up in the New Year!”
Saying no doesn’t mean missing out; it means being intentional about where you spend your energy. I repeat, no FOMO (fear of missing out). Simply more joy because you can be present with your own family. That is a gift with no wrapping paper required!
Build a Buffer
A packed calendar leaves little room for spontaneity, rest, or handling the unexpected. Schedule downtime between events or designate entire “off days” to recharge. This space allows you to be present and enjoy the season rather than rushing through it.
What are your favorite things to do on a night in during the holidays? In the PNW it is dark and rainy at 4 pm so you will often find my family on the couch cuddled under cozy blankets watching our favorite Christmas movies with popcorn.
We rotate between the Grinch, Home Alone, Polar Express, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and the Santa Clause.
Organize Your Calendar Like a Pro
Treat your holiday calendar like a tool, not a stressor.
Use a shared digital calendar: Apps like Google Calendar let you coordinate schedules with family and set reminders.
Color-code your priorities: Use different colors for family, friends, self-care, and work to visually balance your commitments.
Write it down: If you prefer paper planners, jot down non-negotiables first, then layer in flexibility for smaller activities.
