Refresh Your Workspace

The start of a new year is the perfect time to evaluate your home office and make it a space that truly supports your goals. Whether you're tackling work projects, managing household tasks, or hiding from your kids (just me?), a refreshed workspace can do wonders for your productivity and mindset. Here are some tips to give your home office a functional and inspiring makeover:

1. Declutter Your Space

Clutter can be a significant barrier to focus and efficiency. Start by clearing out items that no longer serve a purpose in your office. This might include old paperwork, outdated electronics, or décor that no longer inspires you. Ask yourself: Does this item help me work better? If not, it’s time to let it go. Are you a post it note addict? They can be helpful for a time but consider digitizing your reminders to streamline your space. Paperwork can be shredded or filed away for quick reference.

2. Reorganize for Better Flow

Think about the way you move through your office during a typical day. Are your frequently used items within easy reach? Is there enough space to comfortably work, move, and think? Rearrange your furniture and tools to create a layout that feels natural and efficient. Consider ergonomics too – a properly positioned chair and desk can make a huge difference in comfort and posture. My husband just ordered a desk treadmill to help him get some steps in while he’s on the phone with clients. He along with his brother also enjoy a standing desk at their shared office.

3. Add Functional Storage

A well-organized office needs smart storage solutions. Add shelves, bins, or file organizers to keep your essentials tidy and accessible. Labeling storage containers can make it even easier to find what you need in a pinch. Remember, everything should have a designated place. Don’t just set it down, put it away. A rack for coats, a tray for mail to be sorted, a folder for action items, a cabinet or drawer for snacks. You get the idea. You’ll spend less time searching and more time utilizing your items if you can easily identify where they’re located.

4. Incorporate Personal Touches

Your home office should reflect your personality and inspire you. Add elements that bring joy and creativity to your space. A few ideas include:

  • A potted plant to bring life and freshness.

  • Artwork or a vision board to motivate and spark ideas.

  • A cozy rug or throw to make the space inviting.

  • Photographs of your travels or family.

  • Favorite sports team.

  • Motivational quotes.

5. Light It Right

Good lighting is essential for productivity. Maximize natural light by positioning your desk near a window, and supplement with task lighting for those late-night work sessions. Warm, soft lighting can make your office feel cozy, while bright, focused lighting is great for detailed tasks. I never turn on the overhead lighting in the office! I much prefer the three lamps and natural light through the window.

6. Set the Tone with Organization

Once your office is refreshed, maintain its functionality by adopting daily organizing habits. At the end of each workday, spend a few minutes tidying up your desk and putting everything back in its place. This small ritual can make a big difference in keeping your office feeling fresh and inviting year-round. It’s like doing the dishes before you go to bed. No one wants to wake up to a sink full of dirty dishes. Tidy now and you’ll thank yourself in the morning. Plus it gives the illusion that you checked off everything on your do-to list even if it’s still overflowing. Who actually gets everything done on their list anyway?
