Post-Vacation Organization: How to Get Back on Track
Need a vacation from your vacation? You’re relaxed and sun kissed after a successful family trip yet you’re still overwhelmed…I’ve been there, let me help with a few simple suggestions below!
I’ve debated and laughed with friends about the difference between a family trip and a true vacation. Looking at photos you would never know how much work is involved. Do you agree? Message me and tell me about your latest vacay!
How many layers of sunscreen were applied throughout the day? Did you remember the bug spray? The diapers? The wipes? The towels? Pool toys? Don’t forget about the beach and life vests! How many times did your child misplace their shoes? How much ice cream was consumed as bribery to smile for the last family picture? And so on and so on.
Then when you finally return home to be met with an empty fridge and a mountain of laundry. Worth it? Absolutely. Grateful? Yes and yes. Here’s a guide to help you transition back to your routine and get organized after your vacation.
Unpack Immediately
My friends make fun of me and yes sometimes I do actually leave my suitcase for a few extra days on my bedroom floor because I help my kids unpack all their things first but I promise you won’t regret this simple effort.
Tip: if your vacation accommodations have a washer and dryer try doing your laundry before returning home. Then all you have to do is put your clothes back in the dresser or closet. Game changer!
Next, put away the suitcases and souvenirs.
2. Manage Mail and Messages
Quickly go through and categorize mail into urgent, non-urgent, and junk.
Skim through emails, responding to urgent ones first and flagging others for later attention.
Clear and respond to any important voicemail messages.
3. Restore Home Order
Restock your fridge and pantry with essentials. If you are really feeling up to it you can order groceries ahead of time for pickup or delivery. My favorite is Fred Meyer pick up service but I have yet to actually accomplish this before returning home from a trip. Goal for the next getaway!
Spend a few minutes tidying each room, especially high-traffic areas like the kitchen.
A quick sweep, vacuum, and dusting can make your home feel fresh again.
4. Plan and Prioritize
Make a list by writing down tasks that need immediate attention and prioritize them.
Outline what you want to accomplish in the first week back.
Arrange any necessary appointments, such as for the doctor, dentist, or meetings.
Make a list of anything you forgot to pack for your next trip. Add it to your master packing list. This year I forgot cooler ice packs. Oops.
5. Digital Detox
Transfer vacation photos to your computer or cloud storage. Check your shared photo albums and save your favorites!
Delete unnecessary files and apps from your phone, tablet, and computer.
6. Reflect and Preserve Memories
Write about your vacation experiences in a journal while they’re still fresh.
Organize photos into an album or digital slideshow. I used to do Shutterfly albums but have heard amazing things about Chatbooks. What is your favorite way to preserve your vacation memories?
By following these steps, you can transform the post-vacation chaos into a smooth transition back to your everyday life. Happy organizing!
